Household glass recycling refused by Council

January 30, 2008 12:00 AM

Hexham Liberal Democrats are dismayed to report that household glass recycling, which is carried out in many other council areas, has been refused by Conservative controlled Tynedale Council.

Councillor Rebecca Elton said "We were very disappointed that the plans for household collection of glass in Hexham and Prudhoe have not been given the go ahead on the grounds of cost, relative to the percentage increase in recycling. Instead, it is planned the garden waste wheelie bin collection will be extended to the rest of the Tyne Valley. Less than 10% of glass is currently recycled, with over 90% going in to landfill,so we think that household glass collection is an important service to offer and will be campaigning for its inclusion in the future. In the meantime you can recycle your glass at one of the collection points in Hexham (the Wentworth Car Park, the Co-op Car Park or the Waste Reception Site at Bridge End Industrial Estate)."
