Liberal Democrat Paul Harrison has argued strongly against the Conservatives spending £290,000 on retention payments and the £200,000 a year staff car scheme. Paul said "It is disgraceful that your council tax is being wasted on council managers luxury lifestyles. The Lib Dems have opposed these payments but the Conservative Councillors are happy to pay them. Your money should be spent on services for the people not on managers. I will fight for you and try to put an end to these excesses."
Even Conservative MP Peter Atkinson (Journal 24/1/08) when questioned on council retention payments said he was "very uneasy" and he "questions how necessary these payments are." It appears the Tory MP does not agree with these payments and yet his Conservative Councillors are happy to pay them.
