Sheep swing to Liberal Democrats
It looks as though the Tory plan for the sheep vote is failing. (see - Sheep do vote Tory) Earlier today these four sheep were fed up with the Tory posters filling their fields. They had escaped from their field in search of Liberal Democrat posters, and were making their way to the polling station.
Over the last month your 'intrepid reporter' has travelled the length and breadth of the constituency spreading the Liberal Democrat message and finding out the views of the voters. From West Tynedale to West Wylam, Byrness to Baybridge, and the 'Wilds of Wanney' to the World Wide Web (with dozens and dozens of email messages). What has he learnt?
Firstly the constituency is enormous (more sheep than people). Secondly it must be one of the most beautiful constituencies in England. But what about politics - the only conclusion is that, "it is all to play for". The clear message is that the electorate want change. Disillusionment with politicians and the political system was clear. People have had enough of Gordon Brown and Labour. However there was also a clear disappointment at the Tory decision to bring in an outsider. At the start of April, people were clearly impressed with Vince Cable, but not all were sure about the party as a whole. Following the leadership debates, the performance of Nick Clegg had a dramatic effect. Disaffected Labour voters, undecided voters and even Tory voters are suggesting they will be supporting the Liberal Democrats. But many have still not made up there mind.
One other surprise was the total absence of Labour posters. As previously reported the fields are full of Tory posters (and sheep). However, the towns and villages (with voters) show the Liberal Democrats gaining support. There were even a few Independent posters from loyal family members and friends. But, after searching far and wide, your reporter has yet to see a single Labour poster, even in former Labour strongholds. There must be some, and they must still have supporters, but they are clearly too embarrassed to admit it. Also no cuckoos have been heard yet.
